Keying up Cambodia
Imagine a computer keyboard that can handle the longest alphabet in the world.
That's the Khmer alphabet, the one they use in Cambodia. It's got more than 100 basic characters -- plus countless combinations of accents and markings to go along with them.
Now thanks in part to Canadian funding, there is such a keyboard.
And as we hear from Dispatches contributor David Kattenburg, it's helping deliver the news of the day to the rice paddies of rural Cambodia.

What Villagers Think of iREACH
Report on participatory evaluation conducted on February 2009
The purpose of this document is to report on participatory research conducted at the
two iREACH1 pilot sites in Cambodia during February 2009. The objective of the
research was to explore whether and how iREACH has contributed to the quality of
life within the coverage areas of the pilot sites and whether villagers have
encountered any problems in making effective use of iREACH’s facilities.

Kep Municipality-Khan Damnak Chang Eur: Today is a historical day for Kep Pilot Project-Informatics for Rural Empowerment and Community Health (“iREACH”), which was inaugurated on June 14th, 2008 at Khan Damnak Chang Eur, Kep Municipality.
The Inauguration Ceremony was held at Damnak Chang Eur’s Office, presided over by Senior Minister HE Cham Prasidh, Minister of Commerce of the Kingdom of Cambodia, high ranking officers from municipal government offices, local authorizes, 20 staff of iREACH Kep, IDRC’s representative, and witnessed by 1,000 participants from most part of projected areas, students, villagers, of Kep Municipality.

iREACH stands for Informatics for Rural Empowerment and Community Health
It is a project supported by IDRC (International Development Research Centre). The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) has been awarded a three year grant of US$1.2 million by the IDRC to conduct a pilot project called the Informatics for Rural Empowerment and Community Health (i-REACH) in the field of information and communications technology (ICT). It runs from May 1st 2006 to April 30th 2009.Three sangkat (communes) of Kamchai Mear district in Prey Veng and another three in Damnak Chang’eur district in the municipality of Kep were selected as pilot areas. The MoC has contracted the Maharishi Vedic University (MVU) and the Center for Social Development (CSD), to run the pilots in Kamchai Mear and Kep, respectively..
